Effa Castle, Maude Parker, Susie Castle, and Alice Ward, identified left to right in a manuscript inscription on the reverse dated Summer 1898, pose with toy cannons, a military bugle, and matching military-style caps in this patriotic group cabinet card by Davis, Correctionville, Iowa, made at the height of the Spanish-American War. The deliberate assembly of military props and matching caps by four young women in the summer of 1898 places this squarely within the wave of home-front patriotic photography that swept American studios during the brief but intensely celebrated conflict with Spain, which concluded with the Treaty of Paris in December of that year.

All four women wear white high-necked blouses with puffed sleeves and dark skirts, each sporting a small dark military-style cap with a crossed insignia at the front. Two miniature wheeled toy cannons are positioned in the foreground alongside a bugle and what appears to be a drum or small cylindrical prop. Each woman holds a small cup or tin, suggesting a picnic or canteen theme. A painted studio backdrop depicting a Gothic building at right and a garden scene at left fills the background.

The mount bears the printed imprint of Davis, Superior Finish, Correctionville, Iowa along the left border. The reverse carries the manuscript inscription "Summer, 1898, Correctionville, Io., from left to right: Effa Castle, Maude Parker, Susie Castle, Alice Ward."
