We are pleased to present our Winter Photography Auction, opening January 31 at 1:00 PM Eastern, featuring approximately 270 individual lots spanning the full breadth of 19th- and early 20th-century photography. The sale brings together landmark historical images, rare early photographic processes, and a deep selection of vernacular material created outside the conventions of formal studio portraiture. Collectively, these works offer a direct, unfiltered record of American life, identity, conflict, labor, and memory during photography’s formative century.

Cabinet card photograph showing a man posed in a classroom or lecture setting, standing beside a large chalkboard covered with illustrated text and drawings, including the phrases “Yours for God and Home” and “The Children’s Friend.” The subject holds chalk and appears mid-gesture, suggesting a didactic or moral instruction theme. The photograph is an albumen print, consistent with cabinet card production, and dates by format and presentation to the late 19th century.

The scene is carefully staged, with architectural and decorative elements framing the chalkboard, and a hat and coat partially visible sitting on a chair at right, reinforcing the impression of a classroom or instructional environment. Such images align with period studio practices that incorporated painted or constructed sets to convey occupation, profession, or moral messaging.

The verso bears the photographer’s imprint, “Dr. C. P. Davis, Danielsonville, Conn.” No handwritten inscriptions or subject identification are present beyond the chalkboard text visible in the image.
