Cabinet card photograph depicting a young boy, identified as Paul Montgomery, standing beside a small pet deer and holding its leash. Albumen print on mount, circa late 19th century. The mount bears the imprint of Latour, photographer, Sedalia, Missouri. The young boy wears a long double-breasted coat with a short cape trimmed in dark fabric and a flat cap, standing upright while holding a cord attached to the deer’s neck. The deer faces forward with ears raised, its slender legs extended, and a narrow tail visible. A painted studio backdrop with faint landscape elements appears behind them, with a rock prop is positioned at the child’s side. The leash is held firmly in the child’s right hand, with the deer standing close at his left. Verso with printed advertisement reading “Latour Photographer, Established 1866, Cor. 4th & Ohio Sts., Sedalia, Mo.” Additional printed text includes “All sittings made instantaneously,” “Life size crayons,” and “Small pictures enlarged to any size.” Handwritten inscriptions read “Paul Montgomery aged 3 ys 11 mos” and “Billy aged 4 months.”
