Raw, rare, and unforgettable—this is 19th- and early 20th-century photography at its best. Vernacular portraits, Native American warriors, African American resilience, Mormon pioneers, Western frontier families, and stark post-mortem scenes. Daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, CDVs, and cabinet cards that capture real life without filters. Every image tells a story of survival, pride, and change. A museum-worthy collection for those who know real American history when they see it.

Haunting and historically significant pair of boudoir-format cabinet cards depicting two Chinese men in traditional mourning attire, each wearing a funeral badge prominently pinned to the chest. The oval medallions contain small photographic portraits—most likely of the deceased—indicative of Qing-era Chinese mourning practices, particularly among expatriate communities.

One portrait is signed on the reverse in elegant script: “Lung Quay,” suggesting a personal identification. The other mount bears the imprint of Hower Studio, Baker City, Oregon, confirming both the photographer and location. Baker City was home to a prominent Chinese immigrant population in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, many of whom worked in mining, railroads, and local commerce.

These images not only document funerary customs but also reflect the emotional toll and cultural preservation efforts within the Chinese diaspora of the American West. Rare and evocative, this matched pair offers a window into grief, identity, and community in a period of heavy discrimination and exclusion. A vital and scarce addition to any collection of Chinese-American, Oregon, or immigrant photographic history.
