F. Jay Haynes was a photographer best known for his early photographs of Yellowstone National Park, and this group of nine albumen boudoir cards represents one of the most cohesive and historically significant survey sets his studio produced. He became both the official photographer of the Northern Pacific Railway and of Yellowstone National Park, and these cards were issued under both the "Boudoir Series" and "Haynes Boudoir Views" imprints from his St. Paul, Minnesota, studio. Printed titles visible on the mounts identify subjects including Hayden Valley, Glimpse of the Great Falls, Grand Canyon from Inspiration Point, and Eagle Nest Rock, Gardiner Canyon, with a further view titled Crazie Mountains from the Train bearing the "Haynes Photo" imprint.

The views encompass the full dramatic range of Yellowstone scenery: a broad aerial panorama of Hayden Valley with the Yellowstone River winding through a pine-fringed flood plain, a close plunging view of the Great Falls framed by tall conifers and bare white snags, sheer rhyolite canyon walls dropping to a narrow gorge floor visible in the Grand Canyon views, a hydrothermal formation with rising steam and a cave opening in the foreground, a river-level scene at Gardiner Canyon with large boulders and a tall spire of rock rising above the tree line, and a wide flat panorama of the Crazy Mountains taken from a moving train.

Haynes became the official photographer for the Northern Pacific Railroad in 1883 and was provided with a studio and darkroom on rails built to his design, the "Palace Car Studio," and he traveled through the West until 1905, working in that railroad car equipped as both gallery and darkroom. His photographs were widely published in articles, journals, and books, and turned into stereographs and postcards in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century.
