Elegant and vibrantly hand-tinted stereo daguerreotype by Antoine Claudet depicting Dr. Henry Roome, his wife, and their two children, Frederick and Henry, seated in a richly appointed interior. The mother rests on a tufted settee with an infant in her lap, while the elder child stands between the parents in a finely detailed costume. The image’s remarkable palette includes soft mauves, rose, and gold, enhancing the visual depth when viewed through a stereoscope.

The verso bears Claudet’s signature printed trade label from his 107 Regent Street studio, “Under the Patronage of Her Majesty,” with manuscript notes identifying the sitters and date: “Henry Roome M.D. & wife, Frederick & Henry. Taken in India 1857.” While the image was likely taken at Claudet’s London studio, the inscription may refer to the family’s travel or service abroad. Roome was a known physician, and the portrait may have commemorated his return or departure.

An outstanding and deeply personal family portrait by one of the foremost daguerreotypists of the Victorian era.
