A sixth-plate ambrotype housed in its original full case, the image set behind a decorative gilt brass mat with a scalloped cartouche opening and mounted against a tan paper liner with a dotted border. No photographer's imprint appears on the case, mat, or backing. The process and case style are consistent with the late 1850s to mid-1860s. A handwritten paper slip pinned to the red velvet interior of the left lid panel identifies the subject as "Uncle Harrison Rawlings."

Henry Harrison Rawlings served in the 24th Indiana Infantry. He was apparently wounded in action and was drawing a pension by 1863 and died March 8, 1865. Rawlings is shown in a three-quarter length seated pose, his left arm resting on the arm of a chair, his right hand positioned at his waist. He wears a dark patterned waistcoat with visible buttons, a white shirt with a bow tie at the collar, and a lighter outer garment across his right side. His expression is direct and composed, his dark hair short and combed back from the forehead.

The ambrotype surface shows significant deterioration across the left side and lower portions of the image, with lifting and discoloration of the collodion layer visible throughout those areas. The case retains both hinged panels, the right holding the image and the left the red velvet pad, with the identification slip preserved loose inside. No photographer's imprint appears anywhere on the case or its components.
