Our October auction focuses on historic European photography, we are offering a curated collection of fine and erotic daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, CDV, cabinet cards, stereoviews, and a range of curious and uncommon nineteenth-century European vernacular material. At the center of the sale is a collection of images from the Paris Commune of 1871 and the surrounding “année terrible,” the year of war, siege, insurrection, and reprisal that reshaped France. The focus is on the people who drove those events and lived through their aftermath, and on the city that bore the damage.

The Ancien Amphithéâtre Saint-Côme at 5 Rue de l'École de Médecine in Paris's Latin Quarter is the subject of this albumen silver print, produced by Eugène Atget around 1899–1900. The photograph is dated 1899–1900 and attributed to Eugène Atget (French, 1857–1927), with the medium confirmed as an albumen silver print. By 1898, Atget was specializing in photographs of Old Paris to satisfy the popular interest in preserving the historic art and architecture of the capital.

The façade presents a central arched doorway surmounted by a carved mascaron keystone and flanked by corbeled consoles supporting an ironwork balcony above. Ornamental bas-relief shell and cartouche panels punctuate the plastered wall surface between the arched ground-floor windows, and a pair of tall potted trees frames the entrance steps. Additional terracotta planters and small potted plants crowd the base of the left window bay, while a perambulator rests against the wall to the right, and the foreground is paved in large square cobblestones.

The building at 5 Rue de l'École de Médecine, notable for its entrance and domed structure, housed the Free School of Drawing for much of its history, having originally been built as the seat of the surgeons' community whose schools grew up on that very site, in the shadow of the ancient church of Saint-Côme. The Confraternity of Saints Côme and Damien, established by Saint Louis in the thirteenth century as the first professional association of surgeons in France, was dissolved following the founding of the Royal Academy of Surgery in 1731. The façades at number 5 are classified as historic monuments, the site having served as the former Royal Academy of Surgery and headquarters of the Society of Biology founded by Pierre Rayer.

Institutional examples of this view measure approximately 8½ × 6 15/16 inches (21.6 × 17.6 cm) on the image, with the sheet measuring approximately 8½ × 7⅛ inches (21.6 × 18.1 cm).
