Albumen cabinet card created as a holiday greeting from the U.S.S. Monadnock while stationed at Canton, China, for Christmas 1901 and New Year 1902. The design incorporates a patriotic motif—a stylized eagle formed from American flag elements—along with clasped hands and a small photographic view of the vessel at anchor.
The Monadnock, a Civil War–era monitor modernized for Pacific service, operated in East Asia at the turn of the century during the U.S. Navy’s expanded presence in the region. Crewmembers occasionally commissioned decorative photographic greeting cards while abroad, but examples tied to specific postings such as Canton remain uncommon.
The card retains its printed holiday inscription at the lower margin. Light toning and expected handling wear are present, with the image and decorative elements remaining clear.
