Shattuck, associated with the Hudson River School, is shown seated in profile wearing a dark suit and bow tie. The portrait likely dates to the mid-1860s.

Aaron Draper Shattuck was an American landscape painter connected with the Hudson River School tradition and is known for his atmospheric and moonlit landscape scenes.

Mount imprint for Geo. G. Rockwood on the reverse. Pencil inscriptions identify the sitter as “A.D. Shattuck,” noting him as an artist and attributing to him the well-known Moonlight painting dated 1864.
