Excellent group of three original stereoviews capturing vivid scenes of frontier life and transportation in the American West during the 1870s–80s. Two views are from Gurnsey’s Rocky Mountain Views series, published in Colorado Springs and featuring images “on the line of the Denver & Rio Grande Railway.” The third is an exceptional, unmarked camp scene rich with detail and personality.
"The Ute Pass Wagon Road" – Gurnsey stereoview No. 65/67 shows a stagecoach winding along a dramatic, cliffside trail with visible stonework supporting the narrow mountain road. A striking image of Western engineering and rugged terrain. Label on verso describes the 260-foot-per-mile grade connecting Colorado Springs with South Park.
Stagecoach and Riders at a Mountain Cabin – A companion Gurnsey view showing travelers stopped at a rustic log cabin in a forested valley. Several horses, riders, and passengers are posed outside the station, including a mounted figure and a man seated beside the building’s entrance.
Outdoor Camp Scene with Seated Travelers, Dogs, Horses & Wagon – Unmarked but exceptional image of a group at camp, seated at a table set for a meal, with rifles, saddled horses, a covered wagon, and multiple dogs present. Features both men and women in frontier attire. Pencil inscription on verso reads: "Hardeeville / Pleasure Party."
A rich, visually engaging set of frontier stereoviews showing the human side of Western migration and adventure—stopping for meals, navigating narrow trails, and resting between destinations. A great group for collectors of Western Americana, early Colorado views, or 19th-century transportation.
