An unique lot features a set of three carte de visite (CDV) photographs that are period copies of half plate daguerreotypes by the noted early photographer William A. Mason. These images offer a rare glimpse into the bustling commercial life of Chestnut Street in Philadelphia during the mid-19th century.

Image 1: Captures a detailed view of the north side of Chestnut Street from 2nd to 3rd Streets, circa 1842, as inscribed on the reverse. This scene showcases the vibrant streetscape, complete with storefronts and the architectural styles of the era.

Image 2: Focuses on the northeast corner of Chestnut and 2nd Streets, with a clear view of the street activity and period signage, providing a fascinating historical record of the area.

Image 3: Depicts a segment of Chestnut Street, dated December 12, 1854, and prominently features McAllister & Co., one of Philadelphia's earliest lens makers and a key figure in the development of photographic technology in the city.

Each CDV is stamped with the name "Coonley & Wolfersberger, 920 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia" on the reverse, attesting to their origin and authenticity. The images are rich in detail, capturing the essence of 19th-century urban life and the evolution of Philadelphia's commercial district.

These particular daguerreotypes, from which these CDVs were copied, are significant enough to have versions housed in The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, making these cards an important addition to any collection focused on early American photography, Philadelphia history, or urban studies.
