Silver print stereoview titled along the mount: “Basuto Chief and men (So. Africa), with ‘the long and the short’ of the Boer Army, World’s Fair, St. Louis, U.S.A.” Copyright 1904 by Underwood & Underwood.

The image shows a staged ethnographic group at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, St. Louis. A Basuto chief and several African men stand before thatched structures, holding shields and staffs. At right are two uniformed Boer War soldiers, one notably tall and the other a little person (historically described in period sources as a dwarf), the physical contrast forming the basis of the printed caption’s phrase “the long and the short.”

Toy wagons and props are arranged in the foreground, and the colonial exhibition setting is clearly visible.

Gray mount with publisher imprint along the vertical margins for Underwood & Underwood, New York, London, Toronto-Canada, Ottawa-Kansas, and Washington, D.C.

A strong example of early 20th-century World’s Fair ethnographic photography documenting both African exhibition participants and Boer War military figures.
